Project Details In 2011, The Medford Food Co-op worked with Batzer Construction to radically remodel their building on Riverside Avenue into unique grocery retail space. The 1927 historic building was initially designed as a farmhouse by renowned local architect Frank Clark. It’s had many remodels over the years converting it to a hotel, restaurant, offices, daycare, and it was empty for the last 5 years. The decades of remodeling and turnover left many structural issues to solve. The biggest challenge was opening the interior spaces to create the large retail space for efficient Architect Gary Caperna and structural engineer Phil McCullough chose to use steel beams to replace all the interior structures that were removed, allowed the the store to be vaulted and let in daylight from the dormer window on the roof. The daylight helps reduce the need for lighting throughout much of the day. Energy efficient light fixtures were used for the needed lighting and insulation was increased throughout the building.A storm water “bioswale” in front of the store is planted with native plants and trees to help absorb storm water rather than it flooding into the city sewer system. “Keeping the natural landscape of the property was intentional and different than most retail properties in Medford,” according to Batzer Construction architect, Gary Caperna. “Co-op patrons are going to love it.”To date, the Medford Food Co-op has been awarded nearly $10,000 of incentive money for the energy efficiency measures for lighting and refrigeration. Cartwright’s Valley Meat Company: Blog 2007-2008
Tuesday, July 20th, 2010We were very pleased to build the Cartwright Valley Meat facility in Grants Pass. What a fantastic family business! Even though modest in size, this is one of those projects that really brings home the importance of small and family operated businesses in a community.
Over the course of construction Michele Cartwright documented the progress in their company blog. You can read the whole thing, or here are some links to some of our favorite posts.
